Members

Originally convened by the Ford Foundation in 1997, the members of the Forum represent a broad spectrum of institutional forms, including private banks, financial holding companies, non-profit and non-governmental organizations, social development organizations, and international networks. Members' institutions are funded from an array of sources, including social investment, commercial and concessional debt, and grants. All are committed to achieving significant scale within their countries in order to achieve both long-term sustainability and significant impact.

The Forum's 13 members come from eight countries. Africa has five members: Aleke Dondo is one of the founders of Kenya Rural Enterprise Program (K-REP) and now heads the non-profit arm of K-REP, which works closely with the K-REP Bank, licensed in 1999. Jennifer Riria is executive director of Kenya Women Finance Trust, the largest microfinance lender in Kenya, with over 75,000 members. Chris Hock founded the Rural Finance Facility and its subsidiary, Rural Housing Finance, a $25 million DFI serving poor people in South Africa with micro-enterprise and housing loans until it closed in 2001. Chief Bisi Ogunleye is the founder of the Country Women's Association of Nigeria (COWAN), which has over 260,000 members. Adeniran Adedoja is the head of the Farmers' Development Union (FADU), with over 500,000 farmers in northern Nigeria.

From Latin America, there are three members: Raúl Hernández-Garciadiego runs Alternativas, an NGO working in the poor, arid areas of rural Mexico, promoting land and water-based livelihoods and local processing. Alfredo Hubard-Deffis manages CAME, a micro-credit organization working in the outskirts of Mexico City. María Otero is president of ACCION International, which has worked in Latin America for over two decades, and now has partners in Africa as well.

From Asia, there are two members: Bambang Ismawan, who founded and runs the 60,000 member Yayasan Bina Swadaya (Movement for Self Help) association of farmers in Java, Indonesia. Vijay Mahajan is the founder of the BASIX group of companies, which comprise a micro-finance company, a local area bank, and a non-profit company engaged in action research and training in rural livelihoods, held together by an investment company also engaged in consulting and policy work. BASIX works with over 50,000 poor households. There are two members from the USA: Mary Houghton is co-founder and president of Shorebank, the country's first community development bank, which now manages over $1.4 billion in assets. Jeremy Nowak founded and runs The Reinvestment Fund (TRF) in Philadelphia, which manages about $150 million of assets in various types of development finance activities.

From Eastern Europe, Witold Szwajkowski is the former CEO of Fundusz Mikro, Poland, and now runs Stowaryszenie SENS.
